Andrea was born July 8, 1988 and died in a skiing accident at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia on February 12, 2011.
She was a 2006 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School and a 2010 graduate of John Carroll University. She was employed at HFA at the time of her death.
Andrea had a contagious smile and lit up any room that she entered.
Andrea was a true friend to many and had a genuine interest in whomever she met. She was kind to all, especially those that might be viewed as outcasts or on the fringes.
When Andrea spoke to you , you always felt that you were the most important person in the world. Many people said that she made everyone fell like a million bucks!
Andrea had a special gift for working with the elderly and would do things like shop, make meals or assist whenever asked by some of the seniors that she lived near at JCU.
Andrea loved sports and had an awesome 3 point shot when she played basketball. She had been skiing since she was 4 years old. She had started running again just before her death and was planning to run the Akron Half Marathon with her dad in 2011.
Andrea loved to travel, especially if there was a beach and plenty of friends involved. She had made one trip to Italy in 2005 (to the left is a photo of her taken during that trip) and had always planned to return. She loved all kinds of music including Van Morrison, the Beatles, The Doors, Tom Petty and Coldplay just to name a few.
When Andrea was a Junior in High School we went to Chicago to check out some colleges (and shop of course!). After a long day we stopped and picked up some pizza to take back to our hotel. On the way back, we saw a homeless man. Andrea asked if we could give him our pizza noting that he probably needed it more than we did. She walked over and placed her hand on his shoulder and looked him in the eye and said, “My mom and I have been shopping all day and have all of these packages to carry and my arms are tired. Would you mind taking this pizza off my hands.” He smiled with appreciation. I was amazed as how she could be so generous and leave this man with his dignity intact.
Andrea loved Tom Petty. A friend of hers knew some of the roadies and was able to get them backstage passes to the show in Pittsburgh in the summer of 2010. The morning of the show, I heard her working in the kitchen. I asked what she was doing and she told me that she was making chocolate chip cookies for the band. I chuckled but she told me that they worked hard and was sure they got hungry and would appreciate the snack.
It didn’t matter if you were a street person or a Rockstar, Andrea saw you as a person to feed and nourish—body and soul.
One of the few kind things that Andrea shared with me during her life was an encounter that she had at a gas station. She saw and older woman struggling and went over and pumped her gas and washed her windshield for her. The woman shared with Andrea that she was going through a really rough spell
in her life and this simple act of kindness restored her
faith in people.
" I met Andrea when she became my mother’s helper at the Huntington Green apartments. My mother suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and was having a hard time managing on her own. She hired Andrea to run errands and help her out. Andrea went to Heinens, Marc, the drycleaner, etc. and then put the groceries and dry cleaning away. When my mother finally moved to assisted living, Andrea organized a group of helpers (friends from Walsh Jesuit) to help my mother with her move. Andrea was always sweet, kind and caring and treated my mother with respect and dignity. She was
truly an angel.”
“Andrea brought joy to each and every person in the office where I interned and her spirit and positive energy were contagious. Not a week went by after I left that I didn’t receive a message from Andrea asking me how school was going. She was a caring and beautiful girl who showed genuine interest and compassion for all around her.”
" I only knew Andrea for 4 years yet she touched my life in an immeasurable way (and for the better.) We can always remember her gleaming smile and loving personality. She probably never told you this but she saved my life. "
“There are few people who have made as big an impact on my life as Andrea has. She is the most genuine and sincere person I’ve ever met and she helped me through a not-so-easy stretch of my life just by being herself and probably without even knowing it…she always treated people like you were her best friend in the world. She did a lot for me and I’ll always be grateful to her for that.”
“Andrea’s kindness and passion for life taught everyone around her to appreciate and make the most of what we are given.”
“Andrea was truly a very special young woman, with a heart and disposition that was as beautiful as her smile. It is difficult to imagine a world without Andrea but so wonderful to think if a heaven with her there.”
" Andrea, whom I never knew, gave me a wonderful gift. She was such a remarkable person, radiating love wherever she went. The story of her life touched me greatly because it reflected on something I have come to learn-to really understand-relatively late in life. Love is extremely powerful. And when you love freely, you get so much in return. Andrea has inspired me to concentrate ever more fully on the power of love in everyday life-in every relationship, even in every encounter. I am a better person because Andrea has touched my life.”
“Andrea was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. She changed my life in the short time I was lucky enough to be friends with her. I love her so much.”
“Andrea’s kindness and passion for life taught everyone around her to appreciate and make the most of what we are given.”
“I think about Andrea every day-a constant reminder to smile-to live and love out loud just as she always did.”
